Learn to Read, Read to Learn

Our early elementary literacy program has been updated over the last several years around responsive literacy strategies. There is a priority in students reading a high number of books each year, experiencing a variety of types of texts, and developing thoughtful questions and responses. Beginning in grade 4 and through a student's academic career students will studying authors craft through collected literature and articles, leading to application in writing. Students will continue to read and enjoy a variety of genres and a blend of modern and classical literature, articles, poetry, and plays. Reading and Writing instruction is blended throughout the instructional process, written reflections, and online/classroom discussion along with vocabulary application study. Here are some ways that parents and caregivers can support their children at home.

  • Listen to the books their children bring home to read

  • Read books aloud to their children

  • Talk about books together

  • Go to the library

  • Encourage their children to write for authentic purposes (such as a grocery list, a letter, or directions)

  • Sing songs together

  • Recite nursery rhymes or poetry together

  • Talk with their children about a variety of topics

  • Encourage their children to play outside every day

  • Encourage play in which their children use imagination.

Where are the spelling lists?

Our Responsive Literacy program utilizes a phonics-based program that provides practice in the application of word patterns. Each unit, students learn new patterns and apply those patterns to their writing. Tricky words are identified to emphasize where exceptions exist to common rules. While there you will not find formal spelling lists in our programs, students will still develop as proficient spellers and learn rules, exceptions, and be evaluated based on their application of lessons throughout their units. Beginning in 4th grade, students will experience word work and vocabulary development and continue to develop language orally and in writing while embracing best practice and research-based instructional strategies.
