The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a statewide program designed to help schools identify students who are experiencing behavioral and/or academic difficulties, which pose a barrier to learning success in schools.  SAP offers support to students and their families by assisting them to access school and community resources and services.

The SAP team is comprised of specialty-trained educators (teachers, counselors, nurses, social workers, administrators) and other professionals who work together with community agencies to identify students who are at-risk. They then conduct a formal assessment of the student’s needs and respond with coordinated school and community based resources.

When to refer a student:

If you know a child who is having trouble in or out of school, SAP can help.  Below are some behaviors/reasons that may warrant a SAP referral:

  • Withdrawing from family, friends, and/or school

  • Defying authority, both at home and at school

  • Experimenting with drugs and/or alcohol

  • Unexplained physical injuries

  • Depressed

  • Acting aggressively

  • Talks about suicide

  • Sudden drop in grades

  • Recent loss or traumatic event

  • Divorce

  • Family relocation

Who can refer a student:

Anyone!  Teachers, parents, family members, friends, peers, counselors, nurses, staff, and so on.  A student can also refer themselves directly to SAP.

How does the SAP process work?

Once the Sap team receives a referral, they will contact the parents/guardians for permission to proceed.   After permission is granted, they will gather information about the student from parents and teachers and then develop a plan of action to help the student achieve success in school.  If warranted, services will be offered in school and/or from a community agency.  Please note, we do not diagnose, treat, or refer a child for treatment; we will provide the student/families with information and they will make the choice(s) that best fit their needs and wishes.
