At West York Area Middle School we believe that every child is uniquely able to achieve academic and personal success! But we know that each of these successes will look different because they are starting with different goals, different learning styles, and different interests. As a result, we’re determined to teach in a way that’s conducive to every student. At WYAMS you’ll find academic teams of teachers and students modeled after the “school within a school” philosophy that hints at the higher success rates of smaller schools.

Two core teams of teachers exist at each grade level. In addition to the core subjects, students participate in an exploratory curriculum including wellness, technology, and computer education, art, music, family and consumer science, and exploratory reading. We also offer courses in Spanish and German to our eighth-grade students. These exploratory courses allow students to discover additional avenues of interest and success.

By utilizing the “school within a school” mode, we are continuing our commitment to using our resources wisely. Students are developing a greater feeling of community and school pride which improves attendance. Our teachers are also experiencing more autonomy in developing curriculum and meeting the needs of their students. We are truly embodying the idea of Every Student Every Day.

MARCH 2020

Welcome to the West York Area Middle School. Our school houses students in grades six through eight. Students benefit from curriculum guided by Pennsylvania Core Standards that are delivered by highly qualified teachers and specialists in student-focused, learning environments.

The middle school faculty is dedicated to working with students to promote academic rigor. Our middle school philosophy of teaming provides students the opportunity to succeed in a supportive environment.

Middle school students spend most of their day engaged in core instruction with a grade-level team of highly qualified, content teachers. Core instruction includes a full year of daily-extended instructional periods (approx. 80 minutes) in Math and English/Language Arts as well as a semester of daily-extended instruction in Social Studies and Science. Team planning time allows all of our teachers to collaboratively design instruction and interventions to assist our students academically, socially, and behaviorally.

In addition to the core subjects, students participate in an exploratory curriculum including Computer Education, Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, Computer Design/Graphics, Wellness/Health, and Physical Education. Courses in Spanish and German are also offered in eighth grade. Exploratory courses allow students to discover additional avenues of interest. All students participate in a daily 30 minute intervention period called Bulldog Block. These workshops provide remediation or enrichment in the areas of reading comprehension, math computation, problem-solving, writing, research, and appropriate social engagement. Student data is used to prescriptively assign workshops.

At WYAMS, our students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities including music, athletics, student government, and a variety of other activities and clubs. The middle school also promotes character education by encouraging students and adults to be good people and to exhibit a positive attitude.

Our PTSO meets to plan and provide activities and resources for our students. We encourage all members of the community to join our PTSO in support of our student activities.

With Bulldog Pride,

Mr. Anthony L. Campbell
