WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
At West York Area Middle School we believe that every child is uniquely able to achieve academic and personal success! But we know that each of these successes will look different because they are starting with different goals, different learning styles, and different interests. As a result, we’re determined to teach in a way that’s conducive to every student. At WYAMS you’ll find academic teams of teachers and students modeled after the “school within a school” philosophy that hints at the higher success rates of smaller schools.
Two core teams of teachers exist at each grade level. In addition to the core subjects, students participate in an exploratory curriculum including wellness, technology, and computer education, art, music, family and consumer science, and exploratory reading. We also offer courses in Spanish and German to our eighth-grade students. These exploratory courses allow students to discover additional avenues of interest and success.
By utilizing the “school within a school” model, we are continuing our commitment to using our resources wisely. Students are developing a greater feeling of community and school pride which improves attendance. Our teachers are also experiencing more autonomy in developing curriculum and meeting the needs of their students. We are truly embodying the idea of Every Student Every Day.
